Bulgaria is in the top ten of the EU on the share of energy from renewable sources used in transport, according to data from Eurostat’s analysis of environmental protection in the transport sector. In Bulgaria it is about 6 per cent with an EU average of 7.6 per cent. The country is ahead of the “green energy” indicator in transport countries like Germany, Denmark and Belgium, reports Dnevnik.
Sweden is the leader in the use of green energy in transport with an estimated 40% renewable energy in the transport sector. Finland ranks second with a share of 20 percent renewable energy in transport.
Followed by Austria and France with 9% share of green energy in transport. The fifth position is Portugal with 7%. Sixth and seventh are Ireland and Bulgaria with about 6 percent share of energy use in transport from renewable sources.
At the other pole there are three countries with the lowest share of energy from renewable sources in transport: Estonia – 0.4 per cent, Croatia – 1.2 per cent, and Greece – 1.8 per cent. Other countries with a low share of green energy in transport are the three Baltic republics Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia with a share of about 2.5 per cent and Cyprus – with a share of 2 per cent of green energy in transport.
The share of energy from renewable sources is calculated in a harmonized way in the EU Member States using the SHARES instrument. In the transport sector, renewable energy sources typically include liquid biofuels, hydrogen and biomethane. The target is that in 2020 the average indicator of energy use in transport from renewable sources in the EU will reach 10 per cent, according to Eurostat data.
