The\u00a0European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking, which pools European resources to buy and deploy world-class supercomputers and technologies, announced on December 14 the signature of a contract worth 11.5 million euro for a new supercomputing system in Bulgaria.<\/p>\n
The new system will be capable of more than 4.4\u00a0petaflops, and will be hosted by Sofiatech, the European Commission said.<\/p>\n
Examples of applications for its use may include accurate assessment of seismic sustainability of buildings, weather forecasting, and medical applications to support low invasive diagnostics and the discovery of innovative treatments.<\/p>\n
European Commission Executive Vice-President for a\u00a0Europe<\/b>\u00a0Fit for the Digital Age, Margrethe\u00a0Vestager, said:\u00a0\u201cWith the acquisition of this supercomputer in\u00a0Bulgaria<\/b>, as well as others around\u00a0Europe<\/b>, we are staying ahead in our efforts to address industrial, technological and scientific challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cInvesting in supercomputing infrastructure is crucial to improve the quality of life of EU citizens, boost competitiveness, and advance research and innovation,\u201d Vestager said.<\/p>\n
European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya\u00a0Gabriel, said: \u201cI am very happy to see the efforts begun last year come to fruition with the acquisition of this new supercomputing system in my native Bulgaria.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis new supercomputer will aid European research in driving innovation and fostering better science by providing\u00a0access to leading edge\u00a0HPC\u00a0infrastructures and services \u2013 regardless where they are in\u00a0Europe<\/b>,\u201d Gabriel said.\/The Sofia Globe<\/p>\n
Europe<\/b>\u00a0is at the forefront of\u00a0investment<\/b>\u00a0in next-generation supercomputing infrastructure, having enormous positive effects on society, the Commission statement said.<\/p>\n
An example of this is also the\u00a0EU\u2019s Destination Earth initiative\u00a0, which aims to develop a very high precision digital model of the Earth, which could improve weather forecasting, water management, and environmental modelling.<\/p>\n
Following the announcement of the\u00a0LUMI supercomputer in Finland and the \u00a0LEONARDO supercomputer\u00a0in Italy in October, as well as three other supercomputers in\u00a0the Czech Republic,\u00a0Luxembourg, and\u00a0Slovenia, the supercomputer in\u00a0Bulgaria<\/b>\u00a0marks the latest addition to the supercomputer family by the Joint Undertaking, since September.<\/p>\n
The Joint Undertaking plans to acquire another petascale and a pre-exascale supercomputer in Portugal and Spain. A European Commission proposal\u00a0announced in September will enable a further\u00a0investment<\/b>\u00a0of eight billion euro in the next generation of supercomputers.<\/p>\n
