Unemployment in Bulgaria 4.8% in January 2019

Unemployment in Bulgaria in January 2019 was 4.8 per cent, unchanged from December 2018 and down from 5.6 per cent in January 2018, European Union statistics agency Eurostat said on March 1, citing seasonally-adjusted figures.

However, the percentage in December represented 158 000 people, while in January 2019 it represented 159 000 people, Eurostat said.

Youth unemployment in Bulgaria was 11.8 per cent in January 2019, the same percentage as in January 2018.

In turn, the percentage in January 2019 represented 18 000 under-25s in Bulgaria, while in January 2018, it represented 19 000.

The euro zone (EA19) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 7.8 per cent in January 2019, stable compared with December 2018 and down from 8.6 per cent in January 2018. This remains the lowest rate recorded in the euro zone since October 2008.

The EU28 unemployment rate was 6.5 per cent in January 2019, down from 6.6 per cent in December 2018 and from 7.2 per cent in January 2018. This is the lowest rate recorded in the EU28 since the start of the EU monthly unemployment series in January 2000.

Compared with December 2018, the number of unemployed people decreased by 56 000 in the EU28 and by 23 000 in the euro zone.

Compared with January 2018, unemployment fell by 1.536 million in the EU28 and by 1.233 million in the euro zone.

Among the EU countries, the lowest unemployment rates in January 2019 were recorded in the Czech Republic (2.1 per cent) and Germany (3.2 per cent).

Unemployment was highest in Greece (18.5 per cent in November 2018), Spain (14.1 per cent) and Italy (10.5 per cent).

Compared with a year ago, the unemployment rate fell in all EU countries except Denmark and Malta where it remained stable.
