
Bulgaria’s capital city Sofia continues to attract more and more tourists, with a significant increase of 10 per cent in tourists in 2024 compared with 2023, Sofia municipality’s Visit Sofia said, citing final data.
In 2024, Sofia was visited by nearly 1.27 million tourists, 61 per cent of them foreign tourists (about 778 000), compared with 39 per cent Bulgarians (489 000), according to data from the Bulgarian Tourism Ministry’s Unified Tourist Information System, the February 14 statement said.
August and October saw the largest number of visits.
The largest percentage was the 30 to 59 age group, 63 per cent of all visitors, with the share of men (59 per cent) significantly prevailing over women (41 per cent), the statement said.
Seventy-five per cent of tourists who visited Sofia in 2024 chose to stay in 3, 4 and 5 star hotels.
The main generating markets for Sofia are Italy, Germany, Turkey, Greece and Romania.
Among the top 10 countries whose citizens most often visit the Bulgarian capital are Spain, the United Kingdom, Israel, the United States and France.
The average stay of tourists in Sofia is 2.3 nights, with more than 1700 accommodation places active, offering more than 22 000 beds.
According to Anton Penev, head of Sofia municipality’s Tourism Municipal Enterprise, the data show stable and sustainable growth of the tourism industry in Sofia, which is a positive signal for the future development of the tourism infrastructure and the attractiveness of the capital as an attractive tourist destination.
In 2025, Sofia will host major international events, which will further add value to the destination and consolidate its position as a modern, innovative and exciting European capital, the municipality said.
